Salzburg

Overview and Highlights

  • 4 Days in Salzburg
  • 5 Days in Vienna
  • 4 Days in Budapest
  • Exploring the neighborhoods of Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and others
  • Vienna State Opera House
  • Budapest State Opera House
  • Vienna’s spectacular Musikverein
  • Two Mozart Museums in Salzburg: Birth House and Wohnhaus
  • Franz Liszt Museum in Budapest
  • Beethoven Day in Heiligenstadt in Vienna
    • Our Beethoven Day is now longer and better. In addition to walking through his neighborhood and visiting the wonderful Beethoven Museum, we will have lunch at a traditional Viennese “Heuriger” where the composer lived when he was working on his Sixth Symphony. (A Heuriger is a restaurant in the Vienna Woods that has its own vineyard and makes its own wine.)
  • “The Sound of Music” Tour in Salzburg, and many sites where “The Sound of Music” was filmed. In Salzburg
  • Vienna’s Collection of Historic Musical Instruments
  • Hungarian Museum of Music History
  • Tours of each city led by local guide

Budapest at night: the Danube River, Houses of Parliament, Chain Bridge, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Salzburg Performances

  • An evening of Mozart opera arias during a lovely dinner/concert in Salzburg’s Peterskeller (the oldest restaurant in Europe). The oldest restaurant in Europe, dating from 803. (That’s 803, not 1803 or 1308!)
  • A Chamber Music concert in Mirabell Palace. Mozart performed here.

Vienna Performances

  • And the highlight will be Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” at the Vienna State Opera!
    • The Vienna State Opera is one of the finest–if not the finest–opera companies in the world. Hearing them do “Figaro” a short walk from where Mozart wrote it would be an amazing evening. Our tickets for this are confirmed.
  • An orchestral concert in Vienna’s spectacular Musikverein featuring Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the “Eroica”
  • Johann Strauss, Jr.’s “Die Fledermaus” at Vienna’s Volksoper.
    • In Dr. Nelson’s opinion, this is the most Viennese piece of music ever written. The performers at the Volksoper have this music in their blood!
  • Imperial Mass in Vienna’s Hofburg featuring the Vienna Boys Choir. They have been singing here since 1498.

Mozart’s manuscript to the overture to “The Marriage of Figaro”

Budapest Performances

  • Bizet’s “Carmen” at the Budapest State Opera House.
    • The Hungarians wanted to create something more lavish than the Vienna State Opera House, which was completed a few years before. They succeeded.
  • An evening of Hungarian Music and Dance
  • As an option, you may wish to attend Wagner’s “Flying Dutchman” at the Budapest Opera House.
    • Dr. Nelson did not include this in the itinerary because people are often tired in the last days of a tour. Still, if you wish to attend, let Dr. Nelson know and he can order tickets for you. This is not included in the cost of the trip.

The opulent Budapest State Opera House.
